Ammonite is a unique fossilized shell belonging to an extinct group of marine animals known as “ammonoids” of the class Cephalopoda. This captivating shell comes in various colours, from deep browns to vibrant rainbows. This exquisite fossil is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, identical to the substance that forms the shells of modern-day molluscs. This gives the fossil its characteristic hardness and durability, ensuring it can last millions of years. Its name comes from the Ancient Egyptian God, Amun, who was often depicted wearing ram horns. The spiral shape of the fossil is reminiscent of those horns, hence the name.
Ammolite is when the fossil is opalized and gives it an iridescent sheen of red, blue, orange and more. When the Ammonite shell fossilizes, the shell can form Ammolite on the outside.
