WANDS & BESOMS FAQ
WHAT IS A BESOM?
A besom is a traditional broom, made of twigs tied around a strong wooden pole. It is used to cleanse and purify spaces before rituals of both physical dust and negative influences. Besoms can also be used as protective charms when hung over entrances to the home or under the bed.
WHAT IS A WAND?
To put it simply, a wand is a tool used in Wiccan and Pagan ceremonies to direct energy and perform specific actions in ceremonies such as drawing runes or sigils. Wands are most often made of wood, though metal and crystal variants also exist as the properties of the materials can strengthen certain actions and outcomes.
As part of the Elemental Tools, the wand represents the element of air.
When made of wood, wands are usually made with rowan, willow, or maple but bamboo and eucalyptus wands can also be found.
HOW DO I USE A WAND?
Wands are held in one hand and, like athames, are sacred to the specific user, who will need to consecrate and cleanse their tools before use. To charge your wand, you can simply hold it in both hands to bring it in harmony with your own energies or lay it to charge on a charging plate, crystal cluster or underneath moonlight.
After your wand is charged, here are a few ways you can use it.
Focusing your intentions:
Activating crystal grids
Drawing intentions by spelling them out in front of you
Casting runes & sigils
Be sure to recharge and cleanse your wand periodically after use.
