Protection rituals, also known as apotropaic magic, are rituals for warding off harm, negative energy, or evil influences. Apotropaic magic can involve various methods, including invoking ancestors or deities, casting protective circles, smoke ceremonies or using plants with protective properties like rose and raspberry. These rituals can help to strengthen inner power and banish unwanted energies by creating a shield to protect against unwanted influences.

There are a huge variety of ways you can use protection rituals to protect yourself, your home and your loved ones! We have specially curated this ritual kit to provide you with everything you need to complete these rituals, using a combined approach of three different types of magic workings. However, you can adapt or change this kit to make it your own, or follow your heart and stray from the instructions entirely! Follow your instincts!

Rituals

Protection Mojo Bag (Beginner)

Protection Salt Ritual (Beginner)

Protection Corn Doll (Intermediate)

Protection Mojo Bag

Items

Instructions

Cleanse your tools and ingredients using your preferred method. (Check out our indepth guide to cleansing spells.) While focusing on your intention, add the herbs, crystals and some of the black salt inside the mojo bag, the order and amount is up to you!

On a piece of paper write down an affirmation for protection, or draw a protection sigil. Some great symbols for protection are Pentacles, the Hamsa, Hecate's wheel, The Om, etc.

Fold the paper three times and add it to the mojo bag, then tie the bag closed.

Place or hang the mojo bag near the entrance of your home (or room) to protect the space.

Once your mojo bag has served its purpose, open it and separate the reusable materials (crystals, charms, etc.) from the organic materials (herbs)

Bury or burn the herbs to return them to the earth, then bury or cleanse the remaining elements for future use.

Be sure to thank each piece that was inside for helping you, as you recycle or dispose of them.

Protection Salt Ritual

Items

Instructions

Cleanse your space thoroughly using your preferred method, and focus on protecting your space..

Add the black salt and some of the protection herb blend to a mortar and pestle (or a food processor if you prefer). Feel free to add other herbs that you feel drawn to, or have protective properties. (Check out our comprehensive herb guides here.)

Grind your intention into the herbs and salt for as long as you feel necessary while visualising protective energy flowing from you into the salt mixture.

Sprinkle the salt mixture at all the entrances & exits of your space* (including windows), or sprinkle it along your property line. Imagine the salt forming a barrier between your space, and any negative energies that may want to enter it.

*If you have pets or little ones, you can also hang it in mojo bags, or place it in a bowl near the entrances/exits, out of their reach.

Protection Corn Doll

Items

Instructions

On a small piece of paper draw a protective symbol, sigil, or phrase then fold it three times. While making the doll, visualise protective energy flowing from it, creating a shield of light around your home, that grows brighter as the doll reaches completion.

Peel the husks from the corn, keeping the husks as intact as possible.

Tie a piece of twine around the base of the corn cob, and hang it somewhere to dry out. (This can be used as altar decor, or feel free to cook it and eat it rather than drying it!)

Using a large piece of the corn husk, place a teaspoon of the resin incense and the folded piece of paper with your intention on it in the centre

Fold the husk in half while tucking the sides to seal the resin in, then tie a piece of twine underneath the bulge created by the resin (it should look like a little ghost, this makes the head and the “neck”)

Create the arms by using 2 pieces of the husk laid on top of each other,  fold the ends over then roll and tie off in 3-5 places along the length of the roll. Keep these separate for now.

Then, using the remaining husks, fold them in half, and wrap them around the “neck”. Wrap twine tightly around the bundle and tie off.

Position the arms where you would like, and attach them to the body by wrapping in a figure 8 motion from front-to back on both sides.

Place the corn doll near the main entrance to your home, or within the room that is the most visited.

When your corn doll is dry, and once you feel its protective energy beginning to wane, burn it in a well ventilated area, and visualise the smoke as the protective energies returning home to rest and renew.
