Blue Hair Colour FAQ

Is blue hair dye permanent?

All unnatural shades of hair colour (including pink, blue, purple, green) will fade in time no matter what product you use. But to make it last, minimise hair washing as much as you can, and rinse in cold water as hot water opens up the hair cuticles and allows the colour molecules to wash away. So keep the temperature down as low as possible when you rinse, when you dye and when you shampoo. Depending on your hair type, how bleached it is, and the brand you use, we recommend you re-dye your hair every 3-4 weeks if you want to maintain vibrant colour. In between, either mix a tiny amount of your dye in with some conditioner to use when you shampoo, or use a tinted mask or shampoo such as these products from Nak, Crazy Color and Fanola.

What colour does blue hair fade into?

Blue hair generally fades into a greenish tone as it lightens. Sometimes the results look awesome as a dye fades into a pastel turquoise, but if you don’t like the look as it lightens and aren’t ready to re-dye just yet, use a blue shampoo in between dye applications. After the dye fades you can choose a similar shade that is lighter or darker, but not one that is super light or a different shade like pink or grey hair colour as they won’t take as well.

Can I dye my hair blue without bleaching?

The vibrancy of all hair colour is enhanced by using bleach first. The lighter it is, the better the colour takes and more intense the result. If you have darker hair, without bleach you will get a subtle result using darker shades of blue, like Manic Panic After Midnight Blue or Crazy Color Sapphire. If you don’t want to use bleach, look for a shade that specifically mentions working on darker hair and particularly ‘full coverage’ colour tones. Temporary products like hair chalk and spray-in colours often don’t work very well on dark hair so if you are looking for a fun & bold look we recommend you give your hair at least a light bleach first.
