What is Y2K fashion?

Y2K fashion, also known as turn-of-the-millennium fashion, refers to the clothing trends that were popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, around the time of the year 2000. This period was characterised by a futuristic, technology-driven aesthetic.

One of the most defining features of Y2K fashion is the prevalence of bright, bold colours - particularly neon. Other popular colours included metallics like silver and gold, as well as black and white.

In terms of silhouettes, Y2K fashion was marked by a focus on the waistline. Low-rise jeans, crop tops, and mini skirts were all popular, and many outfits are designed to show off the midriff. Tight-fitting clothing is also popular, especially in the form of stretchy, bodycon dresses.

Another key element of Y2K fashion was the use of shiny and metallic fabrics. Clothing made from shiny or reflective materials like vinyl, patent leather, or sequins is popular. This futuristic aesthetic extended to accessories as well, with metallic handbags and chunky silver jewelry being common.
