Whilst it may not seem it, the coldest days of winter are now behind us. Marking the midpoint between Yule (Winter Solstice) and Ostara (Spring Equinox) is Imbolc, where we celebrate the light and warmth to come of the rising sun and incoming spring. Imbolc invites us to reflect and manifest on our desires for the coming harvest season.
Imbolc, also known as St Brigid’s Day or Candlemas, is celebrated traditionally in the Southern Hemisphere on August 1st, and on February 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. This festivity honours the Goddess Brigid, celebrating the rebirth of spring, fertility, and the warmth to come.
How to Celebrate Imbolc
There are a number of ways to celebrate the first signs of spring, but these are some of our favourites!
Decorate Your Altar
Using symbols and colours of Imbolc to decorate your altar is perfect way to begin your festivities;
Colours: Red & White
Foods: Milk, Cheese, Butter, Honey, Oats, Seeds, Baked Goods
Crystals & Stones: Amethyst, Moss Agate, Bloodstone, Onyx
Herbs: Basil, Bay, Lavender, Jasmine, Rosemary, Chamomile
When in doubt, decorate with fresh flowers, seasonal herbs, and symbols of fire such as candles.
Host or Attend a Bonfire
As Imbolc is a time of honouring the Goddess Brigid and the spring season to come, large bonfires were lit to chase away winter. If hosting your own bonfire, remember that fire safe witches are clever witches. Never leave a flame unattended and always be prepared to safely put out a fire if needed.
Make a Brigid Cross or Brigid Doll
A Brigid Cross is typically made with straw to create a knotted design in the centre, and were traditionally hung over doorways and windows to protect the home from harm.
Another common craft to make for your celebrations is straw dolls made of wheat, oat, or corn husks. These dolls are typically made on Imbolc to bring good fortune and protection into the home.

(It’s Nearly) Spring Clean
This is the perfect time to get out the broom and sweep away anything that is no longer serving you, physically and spiritually. Remove extraneous clutter from your home, and prepare for a bountiful spring. Use your cleaning as a moment of reflection and meditation as you focus on creating a space full of prosperity and protection.
